IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE BOOT SECTOR WAS CORRUPTED BY AN UPDATE BEING PERFORMED TO ADOBE ACROBAT. THE COMPUTER, DELL INSPIRON 8600, WOULD NOT RESTART AFTER THE UPDATE WAS INSTALLED. THERE WAS NO PRIOR HISTORY OF HARD DISK PROBLEMS. THERE WAS NO NOISE.

What failure occurred: Bios recognizes the drive and there are no clicking sounds. When the drive is cool windows recognizes it but I can't read it. After a while the drive becomes unrecognizable in Windows but bios still recognizes the drive. Tried the drive on many machines and diagnostic tools. NO reformat or repartition was attempted.

Drive is NOT visible in BIOS. Computer locked up and would not boot afterward. Drive is not recognized by BIOS. Placed drive in different computer and same result was seen. No software or firmware recovery attempts were made.
