Drive made some noise, but before I was able to back up, it stopped functioning. Upon start up it was clicking only. I tried viewing it using and external case and a different computer but as soon as I saw that it does not show, I abandoned the effort in order to prevent further damage.

The drive was plugged into the USB port and failed. It made a grinding noise for a while and when I disconnected power, it was warm to the touch. If the computer is booted with the drive connected, the computer fails to boot. When the drive is plugged in, it does not appear to be available and the device manager reports "This device cannot start (Code 10)."
